    Well, the price is up to about $20 now, but here it is, a fully heat shielded, cold air ducted shortie intake on the cheap.

    Holden, you don't have to close the system in rain...I have very much what you've done. I routed the 4" dryer hose from the front grill (painted black) to my stock airbox (w/ resonator removed of course) which encloses a 3" short ram w/ K&N to the engine. The short ram aluminum pipe is insulated w/ some heat wrapping materials. I have gone through some heavy thunderstorm..no problem..

    I just drove it. Nothing rubs or bangs. It's 70 degrees now, so hard to compare to the last time I drove it with the AEM (95 degrees).

    But, in first gear the 215mm tires are breaking free over 6K rpm and requiring subtle throttle input. This is with a smooth launch and a Quaife LSD. That's about the peak power I've felt out of the car.

    Poor bugs! What a way to go! Hope you remembered to clean out the coffee grinds before hooking it up!

    Looks like you'd suck a lot of rain with that setup. Do you just detach the inner tube when it does??

    Why did you go custom (other than the obvious adventure of doing it yourself)? I have the AEM CAI - what's the diff?

    Chuck: I've only started the engine and revved it to check for rattles and/or clearance issues. The can is very close to the hood.

    I've been using my AEM cai through this heat wave and even with that the car ran sub-par with more J&S activity than usual.

    BadAss: It's not a coffee can. For the record, this setup is: 3" IP Intake, 4" aluminum ducting around the intake for heat shielding, painter's can (unused) for filter heat shield, 3" aluminum ducting for cold air and a 3"-3" rubber elbow for the snout.

    I don't know if I'll close it in the rain. The big bend in the 3" ducting will stop any water. I might just punch a drain hole or two in it there. I'd be amazed if any water ever made it to the filter.

    I went custom because: A) I'm broke. B) I like doing this stuff. C) I like ugly, home made looking parts (makes beating show/showy cars even sweeter!).

    Plus, I don't want the engine to HAVE to suck through a long 3" pipe. If it wants more air, it can get it easily. At WOT at speed, the engine bay air won't be so hot. Many of the off-the-shelf cold air boxes force the engine to suck through long tubes even though they have short intake pipes.

    BTW, the AEM cai is only about 2.75" ID. It's just about perfect for NA use, but a little restrictive for boost.
